Blues School: Groove

Having a library of fancy licks in your bag will only get you so far. You need to play them with "good time" or things just won’t feel quite right. The rhythmic goal is the elusive notion of "groove". Groove is hard to define, but easy to recognize. Your rhythmic goal is to establish a deep, unrushed groove. One key to success is to stop thinking the time and to start feeling the groove. Merely thinking about the time by counting in our heads is an abstraction that distracts our attention away from feeling (and enjoying) the concrete physical and sonic experience of the music we are playing. In fact, the abstract notion of time as a mathematical construct and the concrete experience of time as physical motion reside in different parts of our brains! So, feel the time in your whole body and enjoy the results!
