The idea is to approach each chord tone from the very nearest note either above or below played on the down beat. At first glance, the following bebop-ish example looks absolutely random and devoid of any patterns, but... It is simply a continuous string of swinging eighth notes where some of the chord tones are approached from the nearest note above or below to suit the flow of the melodic line.
