Lead Sheets

A lead sheet is an easy-to-read visual representation of a tune that concisely communicates the most important information about that tune: the key, time signature, form, melody, chord changes, and other performance notes. Professional musicians prefer to read from lead sheets because they do not want to be encumbered by reading each and every note or to be constrained by someone else's particular arrangement. You should aspire to do the same. Lead sheets are the format used in jazz "fake books", but lead sheets can be used for many styles of music, not just jazz. Enjoy the two examples below.
